Quality medical treatment overseas - let us be your guide

Isn't it strange how the Australian public health system seems to regard teeth as an optional extra? Medicare doesn't cover even basic dentistry except for concession card holders...and these often face waiting periods of up to two years for treatment. Anyone would think teeth were a luxury!

The internet has made it possible for anyone to organise their own overseas travel, and medical tourism is no exception. But when it comes to arranging medical treatment overseas, is it a good idea to do everything yourself?

In a recent survey of people who've travelled overseas for medical procedures conducted by the Medical Tourism Association, slightly over half the respondents said they had used the services of a medical tourism facilitator. But only 2.4% of respondents said they definitely wouldn't recommend a future patient to use a medical tourism facilitator.

Medical tourism is a worldwide industry: patients seeking quality medical care can find it everywhere from Hungary to Costa Rica.

But much of the growth in medical tourism in recent years has been in Asia - both the Indian subcontinent, and in South East Asian countries like Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore and the Philippines.

This is great news for Australians interested in travelling overseas for medical treatment. Because of our proximity to Asia, we can take advantage of low airfares and relatively short travelling times, and still have a huge number of high quality healthcare options, right on our doorstep.

When Australians think about medical tourism, they're most often thinking about cosmetic surgery. While medical tourism isn't just about cosmetic surgery, having cosmetic surgery overseas has received quite a bit of recent media coverage in Australia.

If you've decided on a cosmetic surgery procedure, there are many benefits to having it done overseas: you can get access to highly experienced doctors and quality nursing care, in beautiful facilities, at prices much lower than you would pay in Australia. But before signing on the dotted line for an overseas cosmetic procedure, there are some questions you should be able to answer, with the help of your medical tourism facilitator.

Medical tourism is a fast-growing industry in Australia, and has been the topic of a lot of media stories lately. Media exposure is mostly a good thing for the industry - it educates people about an option they might not have been aware of, having high-quality medical treatment overseas at an affordable price.

But the media don't tell the whole story. Not all medical tourism providers and facilitators are the same. Here are some common beliefs about medical tourism that might be true in a few cases, but certainly don't apply to the industry as a whole.
